Decide how you will finish the outer edges of your quilt before you prepare for quilting. Traditionally, the outer edges of quilts are encased in binding after the quilt is quilted. The binding wears better than other options, so the time spent applying the binding is worth it if you want the quilt to last a long time. Binding techniques are described on our Binding Quilts page.
