Japanese Egg Doll
Learn to make a Japanese egg doll to celebrate Hina Matsuri. In Japan, Hina Matsuri -- which translates to "Doll Festival" -- is celebrated on March 3 of each year. Sometimes also called "Girls' Day," families observe this holiday by praying for a young girl's good health and happiness and by displaying ornamental dolls.
Kids can make their own special dolls for this Japanese holiday by starting with a raw egg. The result is extraordinary and special!

What You'll Need
- 1 raw egg
- Needle
- Bowl
- 1 plastic soda-bottle cap
- Glue
- Colored tissue paper
- Black yarn
- Paints
- Fine paintbrushes
How to Make a Japanese Egg Doll
Step 1: Use a needle to make a small hole in one end of a raw egg. Stick the needle inside the egg to break the yolk.
Step 2: Make a slightly larger hole in the other end of the egg.
Step 3: Hold the egg over a bowl, and blow on the small hole until the raw egg comes out the larger hole. You have to blow hard!
Step 4: When the egg shell is empty, gently rinse out the inside and wash the outside. Let it dry.
Step 5: Glue the large end of the egg into a soda bottle cap so that it will stand up.
Step 6: Use tissue paper to make kimonos for the doll.
Step 7: Glue on black yarn for hair. Paint the doll's face.
Tip: Use the raw egg to bake a cake or cookies, and have a Hina Matsuri tea party!
