Making your home look clean can certainly feel like a full-time job. But if you’re as busy as the rest of us, you probably don’t have the time to always give your home a top-to-bottom cleaning. Don’t worry. We’ve got short-cuts and tips to make your home look and feel sparkling clean – even to your fussiest friends and family. You’ll get all the glory when they compliment your handiwork – and they’ll never know you took a few shortcuts.
Scan your open counters, kitchen and coffee tables. Are they stacked with magazines, bills, toys, remote controls and more? Clutter can make your house look messier than it actually is. Tidy spaces up by putting what you can away in their proper places (have the kids run the toys to their playroom) and tucking the rest into drawers or onto an empty shelf. Dust collects on and under stacked objects, so quickly run a dust cloth over the newly uncluttered spaces.
Always keep a quick floor-duster handy. The replaceable sheets that come with it, to clean your floors? Don’t buy a fancy dust cloth, grab one of those cloths – store brand is fine – and use it on top of your TV (and on the screen), coffee table and shelves. The same way those sheets attract the mess on the floor, they will pick up the dust and mess around your house.
Put Away Clothes
It’s so easy to drop jackets, shoes and sweaters when we walk in the door. If it’s not you or your mate, it’s the kids shedding boots, Crocs and rain gear everywhere. Again, clutter can make a tidy house look dirty – or a slightly dirty house look really messy. If you’re looking to clean up quick, hang up jackets, put shoes in closets and throw everything else into the hamper -- or behind the bed in a room no one will be in.
Cat and Dog Hair
Animal hair can make a house seem a lot messier than it is. Invest in a tape-style lint brush – you don’t need the pet specific ones, store brand will do – and quickly clean off chairs, sofas, duvets and even the drapes, before company comes over. Or, you can use an old rubber dish glove – just run it over the spaces you need to clean and rinse off in the sink. Just don’t do dishes with it later, please.
Quickly check the toilet, squirt a little cleanser in the bowl and give it a scrub. Let it sit while you spray down the sink and counter and give it a quick wipe-down with a sponge or paper towel. Use the wet towel or sponge to wipe any stray smudges in the tub/shower, spray some cleanser on the floor of the tub. Flush the toilet, run the shower on hot for 30 seconds and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
